I was having lunch in the dining room today when a call went out on the radio from one of our dive boats. The cox had spotted a pair of humpback whales a few hundred metres off the point. I ran off to pick up my camera, and fortunately they were still there when I returned.
It looks like the pair were a mother and calf – probably the same ones that were spotted in the area by one of the cruise ships a week or so ago. They weren’t really doing much – just wallowing in the sunshine, and occasionally waving a giant flipper around and smacking it down on the surface. I watched them for an hour or so before they finally dived and headed out to the open sea.
