A few days ago we had our final visit of the summer from a cruise ship. This one was called ‘Ocean Nova’ and was small enough to be able to moor up at the wharf. Once again, the base became briefly overrun by yellow-jacketed tourists, there was a short but furious brief feeding-frenzy at the shop, then a couple of hours later peace and quiet returned.
The next visit from a ship will be from the BAS resupply vessel, RRS Ernest Shackleton. She will come by for last call at the beginning of April, offload stores for the winter and then take away the few remaining summer-only staff. Once she slips away there will be no more visitors for the next 7 months!
