A seal pup, one of the first few of the season, is born on a beach near the base.
A skua nips in to grab a mouthful of placenta, while the seal-mum defends her pup.
Sometimes they don’t make it. A male fur seal looks on as a geep salivates over seal-pup a la maison.
The geeps can get a bit possessive. The skua just has to wait patiently for his mouthful of rotting pup.
The adults don’t always survive either; the beach in front of the base is littered with the remains of seals past, all picked clean and bleached by the sun.
